Westerbork

Why? would we want to go to a concentration camp I see you asking, well its my mum she read the Diary of Anne Frank many years ago she then visited in Amsterdam Anne Franks house and she said then that she wanted to see the other places she went to when she was captured.

Westerbork was the place that Anne Frank and her family where moved to when they where captured they lived in barrack no 67 this was the punishment barracks and people where usually only here for a week at the most and they where then shipped straight out to Auschwitz, but Anne Frank and her family helped with production and because of this they stayed alive longer,  this concentration camp was a holding camp they where brought here and then  moved on within the week usually 1000 a week were  deported to the different camps. Every Tuesday the train left, for the different concentration camps, none of the people knew where their final destination would be. BUT i AM SURE THEY GUESSED!

Anne Frank and her family were on the next to the last train to ever leave Westerbork, Anne Franks and her family went to Auschwitz, only Otto Frank survived, Anne Her self die in Auschwitz of Pneumonia.

We first of all picked up our Friend Anniena and Olga, and then we set off its was about 1 and a half hours drive, Westerberg is situated in the Netherlands but is accessible from Germany also which would have been easier from our house but the drive there was very picturesque with much to see.

The first place we visited when we arrived was the museum, we didn't take any photos in there, we didn't have time there was so much stuff to read, and movies to watch from the camp, all in all we where in the museum for around 2 hours.

Then we set of on a 2.9 kilometre's walk to the Camp its self on the way there,  you pass all of the planets as this is also the site of the biggest radio satellite in the Netherlands

We had loads of laughter on the way there mum as usual cracking jokes and Anniena making fun of here because she asked a silly question, she asked what is the arrade, I have never heard of that planet... and Anniena said you are standing on it... Mum said where... and we fell about laughing... at her aarde  is of course Nederland for earth mum will have to start reading more Dutch...  silly mum

We went for a meal in a local Hotel

I had 300g rib eye steak with chips and vegetables., mum had a plate of raw cold meats with fresh bread to start and salad, then the 300g rib eye steak with potatoes with cheese mixed vegetables and salad.

Anniena and Olga had a cheese and fish salad with fresh bread, and then a huge (biggest I have seen)  piece of liver with vegetables,  salad and potatoes. we also had 3 Ice lemon teas and mum of course had to try the local beer.. the cost was in total 81 Euros, mum said that was a very good price we where all full the potions where huge and the  meal and presentation was excellent.

here we are eating... sorry not me I am taking the picture....

Well that wasn't it... we went off then Hunebed hunting.

What is a hunebed  (mean Grave of the Giant)

its an old burial place dating back to Neanderthal man. no one knows how these stones got there , or were they came from as the Netherlands sis flat there are no cliffs or quarries to dig these out despite research and test no one knows... a lot only that these where burial grounds..

were I stand is one of the graves

so what if its been here for thousands of year I still had to see if I could push it over

The scale of it.

a Reconstruction of the houses they lived in

Just before we left while we  were still searching for Hunebedden  as in this area there are 6 sites,

we found something very interesting this tied in with the original visit to the Concentration camp,  a lot of the Jewish people where never found, and many didn't come out from there hiding places for months after the war was over. here is a  reminder of were they hid, during those long years . This site is in the forest its built under the ground and was were many family lived during the years of the war. and for many months after,  a lot has been vandalised, and so we can only now show you the entrance in this picture but there are models close by that show you how it would have looked unfortunately Anniena who took most of the pictures of the day, was getting very very wet as it had just really started to rain.. so that was it we went home

Not for the faint hearted this day out... lots of walking in all about 8 kilometres. although very flat and very picturesque. there are many stopping places and many toilets in wooden shelters on the way there there is also a bus, and a tour with a talk. although walking only inside the camp, mostly in Dutch, but here are a lot of leaflets, and descriptions in English and German.

best way to do it is on a bike... but although we all have one we dont have a bike carrier on the car.... a must for other trips I think.

Well worth a visit

Thankyou to Anniena for all the photos... they are great.... brilliant camera sorry it was so heavy and se wet on that day!
